5 Hobbies and Interests for People Over 60

PlanEnroll

Wondering how you’ll spend your “golden years?” Like many seniors, you’ve probably spent many years looking forward to retirement. Make the most of it by staying active and enjoying some new hobbies or special interests!

It’s never too late to learn a new skill or explore a passion that’s always seemed intriguing. Now that you have more time for yourself, take full advantage of it and explore some of the following hobbies and interests to stay healthy and fulfilled.

1. Fitness

Living an active lifestyle isn’t just a good way to spend time — it’s actually essential to your overall health and wellbeing as you age. Whether you love to take long walks around the block or you want to try a low-impact exercise like swimming, staying fit can help lengthen your life, reduce your risk of developing mobility issues, improve your mental health and so much more.

Exercise on your own or attend a group fitness class with your friends and maybe even meet some new ones along the way. Fitness is an excellent way to get up, get moving and improve your social wellbeing as well as your physical health.

Make sure to always consult with your physician before starting a new exercise program.

2. Art

Have you always wanted to explore the limits of your creativity? Art can take many forms — it’s much more than drawing or painting.

Many seniors flex their creative muscles by taking up hobbies like woodworking, metalworking, ceramics or even glassblowing. Each of these mediums provide an interesting way to make functional works of art that you can keep for yourself or give as gifts. You might even be able to turn your craft into a post-retirement gig for extra income!

3. Music

It’s never too late to pursue your passion for music. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano, the violin or any other instrument, there’s something exciting about discovering the joys of music.

With today’s technology, you don’t even need a professional instructor to teach you how to play. YouTube videos and other websites on the internet offer expert-level instruction right at your fingertips.

4. Pets

Whether you’re enjoying retirement alone or with a partner, adopting a pet provides so many benefits for your wellbeing. A pet dog, cat, bird or rabbit can be an excellent companion during your senior years. Animals have a lot of love to give and can be a real bright spot in your daily life.

If you don’t have the time or ability to take care of a pet yourself, you might spend some time visiting the local zoo, going birdwatching or even volunteering at your local animal shelter to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of an animal’s company.

5. Gardening

Gardening is a rewarding hobby for people of all ages. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the natural world around you. Whether you want to beautify your yard with a flower garden or you’re planning to start a vegetable patch, you’ll get a sense of satisfaction growing something on your own from scratch. Plus, fresh fruits and vegetables make excellent additions to healthy, home-cooked meals.

There’s an endless number of options when it comes to exploring new passions, hobbies and leisurely pursuits after you retire. The best part is that many of these activities are inexpensive and won’t have you dipping into your retirement savings. Now is the time to develop your interests — they’ll help you enjoy your retirement to the fullest!

Final expense life insurance may not cover the entire cost of your funeral and may be used by the designated beneficiary for any purpose rather than being limited to specific funeral services and providers. Final expense life policies will have a lower face value than most traditional term or whole life policies as they are intended for a specific purpose of covering those final costs rather than providing comprehensive support for surviving family members. This type of policy generally doesn’t require a medical exam, but premiums will be higher the older you are, and some benefit payouts may be limited during the first few years of coverage for those with significant health issues. Reducing or skipping premium payments will impact the amount of interest paid and may impact how long the policy lasts. Accessing the cash value of a policy will reduce the available cash surrender value and the death benefit. A policy owner does not have the ability to make unlimited payments into the policy. If too much is paid into the policy, it will become a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC) and withdrawals and loans will be taxable. Coverage may not be available in all states and may vary by state. Policy guarantees are based upon the claims-paying ability of the issuing life insurance company.
