7 Tips to Prevent the Flu

Cold and flu season can be a dangerous time of year for many, especially seniors. According to the CDC, nearly 90% of influenza deaths per year are people over the age of 65. Luckily, there are several simple things we can do to help prevent sickness and passing illness to others.

Tip #1: Get vaccinated

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get your annual flu vaccine. Flu shots strengthen your immune response and help your body fight off potential illness. Pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for those over 65 to help protect against pneumonia and meningitis. Talk with your primary care physician to find out which vaccination options are best for you.

Tip #2: Wash your hands

Frequent hand washing helps remove germs and bacteria that can make you sick. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds (or sing the Happy Birthday song twice) while scrubbing well. Keeping hand sanitizer handy is also a good idea.

Tip #3: Avoid touching your face

It’s something that’s easy to do without thinking about it, but it’s a habit you should work on avoiding or breaking. When you touch your face, it can transfer germs your hands have collected onto your face. Especially avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Tip #4: Clean surfaces

Surfaces should be sanitized regularly, especially in public places. Tables, doorknobs, computers, phones, car steering wheels and stair railings are just a few surfaces you should sanitize during flu season.

Tip #5: Avoid close contact with sick people

All too often, we think visiting loved ones who are sick is a nice thing to do. It’s better that you do not get in close contact with sick people. If someone in your household isn’t feeling well, give them space.

Tip #6: Avoid crowded public places

Take extra precautions when going to public places. Churches, restaurants, airplanes and entertainment venues can all be hotbeds for germs. Carry hand sanitizer with you and consider if the event is worth the risk of getting sick. Remember: most restaurants have takeout options.

Tip #7: Good health starts with a healthy lifestyle

There are easy things you can do to help your body fight off illnesses. Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to help fight illnesses. Eating healthy foods, especially foods high in vitamin C and zinc (both of which can help boost immune response), is an easy and delicious way to stay healthy. Moderate exercise can also help your body fight illness — and having a workout routine is one of the best ways you can stay healthy.

Conclusion

Flu season isn’t fun. But there are ways to help prevent it from becoming dangerous. Incorporating these small tips into your life can help you fight off illnesses and live a healthier life.

Final expense life insurance may not cover the entire cost of your funeral and may be used by the designated beneficiary for any purpose rather than being limited to specific funeral services and providers. Final expense life policies will have a lower face value than most traditional term or whole life policies as they are intended for a specific purpose of covering those final costs rather than providing comprehensive support for surviving family members. This type of policy generally doesn’t require a medical exam, but premiums will be higher the older you are, and some benefit payouts may be limited during the first few years of coverage for those with significant health issues. Reducing or skipping premium payments will impact the amount of interest paid and may impact how long the policy lasts. Accessing the cash value of a policy will reduce the available cash surrender value and the death benefit. A policy owner does not have the ability to make unlimited payments into the policy. If too much is paid into the policy, it will become a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC) and withdrawals and loans will be taxable. Coverage may not be available in all states and may vary by state. Policy guarantees are based upon the claims-paying ability of the issuing life insurance company.
